The last of Sri Lanka to fall under European influence, the hill kingdom of Kandy retained more than any other region its religious and cultural identity in the 18th and 19th centuries.
It remains the cultural capital of the island and in July and August plays host to Sri Lanka’s most famed Pera Hera – a rich procession of elephants and a thousand dancers that parade the relic of Buddha’s tooth.
